Amherst Virginia Historic Train Station

A Project of the Friends of the Historic Amherst Train Station

We are on our way and have completed Phase I of a 3 phase construction project for the restoration of the train station.  Funded through IS-TEA grants (administered by VDOT) to be used in the enhancement of travel along the United States travel system.

Phase I (Completed in 2008):

This phase involved the stabilization of the existing building, removing the roof tiles, and saving as many as possible for re-use.  Shoring the post and beam contruction, reinforcing or upgrading, employing as little new material as possible.  Storage cleaning and protection of historic materials for re-use.  PReparing the site for the new location, grading, pouring the slab for placement of the building, backfill, etc.  Finally, wrapping and securing the building on its new foundation awaiting Phase II.

Phase II

The second phase involves the restoration of the exterior of the bnuilding.  Replacing the roof tiles and other exterior historic materials.  Some exterior grounds work and preparing the building for other modern upgrades, electricity, water, sewage and communications.  The station exerior will be restored to how it looked in it's 1920's era

Phase III

The third phase will include completion of the interior renovation  with the remaining historic materials salvaged from the stabilization in Phase I.  This will include new millwork to match historic materials.  Wiring and plumbing to modern standards will be installed.  Walkways, parking, landscaping will be included in this phase.
